| Customer Reviews: Excellent computer / HRM with accurate altimeter March 2, 2010 Bruce Bomphrey (Hampshire UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have used this several times now, and seems to be extremely accurate. have calibrated against a GPS for speed etc. One tip - don't use the wheel circumferences in the manual. Measure your own several times and take the average and do this while sitting on the bike with the tyres at your normal riding pressure (you'll be amazed at the difference measured!)
The altimeter functions in particular surprised me - they are extremely accurate over the duration of the rides I have done (c. 2 hours on rolling hills). Most folks say these pocket-sized devices aren't accurate but this one got the max. altitude to within a few feet of the actual (from detailed 1:25000 map data). OK - That was on a day with stable weather conditions - on long rides in changeable conditions you can select points on your route to re-calibrate the altitude.
The wheel and Heart rate sensors re-synchronise quickly with head unit after a standby period, with a simple two-button operation. I have had no problems with loss of communications during rides at all - seems very stable indeed.
You can set 3 training zones of different intensity (as measured by your heart rate) and the computer will tell you time in, above and below zone. Plus all the usual minimum, maximum etc.
I haven't bought the cadence transmitter (optional extra) but I may yet get it as the Power calculations depend on it.
The only criticism I have is that the manual is overly complicated and has taken me several hours of reading it to work out most of the standard, important functions. If I had time I would write a simple guide to how to set this up, and what to do before and during each ride!
Also, slightly weirdly after my first ride, with brand new batteries, the unit froze on me after returning home before I had a chance to record all the data. The only way to use it was to do a reset-all! However I emailed VDO who immediately offered to test it under warranty (5 years!) and replace if faulty. I have not had any problems since a battery fault was implied - if it happens again I'll test the warranty procedure!
Overall extremely impressed with the range of functions and the accuracy of this device
